STOP the Glorification of BUSY

One of the most common responses I get from people when I ask them how they are is “I’m so busy with <usually work, but insert anything here>”. I don’t want to be rude. But actually when I hear this I just want to tell the person to stop. Just stop it. The reality is we are all busy! Of course we are – we are humans…we crave a life that is full and brimming with all the good stuff. If you know me at all by now you know that I love to learn. The more I learn about anything and everything the more fulfilled I feel. It keeps me, well, busy. For me that is busy in a positive sense. It is something that I do for me, it makes my heart sing.

Then there is a negative kind of busy. The kind when people are frantically trying to fit 3923 things into a single day, or have a to-do list so long just the sight of it gives you heart palpitations, or absolute worst case scenario is that you use “busy” as a means to justify your worth or your value or your importance. As if it gives your life some kind of significance. First of all, I don’t want anyone to have to justify that to me…let alone to themselves! The reality is that this kind of busy leaves you feeling zapped of all energy, depleted and for all of your well-intended purpose, you can ultimately feel somewhat lost.

There are a couple of remedies to this situation. I am a HUGE fan of working smarter, not longer, to ultimately achieve more. Some days I have to work longer hours, but it is an exception, not a habit. My after work time with my family is non-negotiable and feeds my soul. Make sure your day isn’t filled with tasks. Take some time to unwind and do whatever it is that makes you happy.

The second thing you can do is nothing. Or maybe something that is really nothing. Like setting aside some time to meditate, read a book, or take a bath. This means switching off from work, emails, social media. It means that you have to slow down, both your mind and your body. When you do this it allows you to be completely present in the moment. You can listen more, feel more and ultimately create the space for more. Ironic huh?

So. What have we learnt today busy people? Do less. Achieve more. Change your life. Possibly change the world*

*This is not proven, but I believe in you!
