Have you got Monday blues? Don’t worry. I’ve got some VERY good news for you….
YOU NEED TO GO SHOPPING
It’s ok, thank me later (as if you needed your arm twisting!). You want to know why? Summer is here. I mean we’re just about in August and everyone is getting ready for a (northern hemisphere) summer vacation kind of here. Which is why I have two words for you. SUN.PROTECTION.
If you want to look young, healthy and glow-ey (as well as avoid skin damage and skin cancer) you absolutely must protect yourself from the sun. The good news is it means we need to get ourselves fully equipped with some super sun smart savvy kit (hence why you need to go shopping!). Because I’m super generous I’ll even help you with your shopping list! Without further ado, here it is…my super easy way to get sun smart shopping list: (it’s technically 3 things, which could be expanded into many many more depending on how you look at it!)
1. I scream, you scream, we all scream for Sunscreen
Wear it. Always. This one is non-negotiable my sun smart friends! The sun’s rays are damaging and unforgiving whether you turn into Larry Lobster or not! Here’s the kicker though. Most sunscreens are actually made up of nasty chemicals (PABA, oxybenzone, nanoparticles, parabens, phthalates, and dyes – YIKES). Luckily for us there are some amazing brands out there doing super safe sunscreen sans nasty chemicals! Always go for a broad spectrum (means you get protection against UVA and UVB rays) and at LEAST SPF 15 (the lower the SPF the more often you need to reapply). Some of my faves available in HK are from Melvita, Lavera and Badger (easy tip, key words are organic and mineral).
2. Will the real slim shady please stand up? (And put on a hat?)
You’ve got to protect the super delicate skin around your eyes and the best way to do that is to don a pair of sunnies. Personally I’m a fan of big shades. Like VB kind of big (Mrs Beckham is so famous she only has initials now. Derr). Not only do they look sizzling the more coverage you have, the better it is to protect from…well…sizzling. Then get yourself a hat. The good news? Hats are trés fashionable these days (think panama) and look super chic poolside, but if you’re a bit of a tom boy like me then you can’t go past a good ol’ trucker to complete your casual look. This is also the best way to protect from pigmentation which may not appear straight away, but is oh so hard to correct afterwards! 3. Layer upon layer
Layers rule. Not only does it require more shopping, but it is perfect for those moments when you just can’t find any shade and you need to cover up. The main point is that it covers your skin so I’m not talking about a vest top under your t-shirt. Make sure you can cover your skin if you are in direct sunlight.
Finally, here are a few extra tips which never fail me. Always carry a lip balm around with you. No one likes cracked dry lips. One with SPF is bonus points. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. I always carry an H20 supply around with me in the hot months. Especially in Hong Kong. Go and buy a beach bag. You will need a good one to carry around said items off shopping list.
On a personal note, you may or may not have noticed that I have olive skin thanks to my beautiful Filipino Mama, which generally means that I don’t turn quite as pink or burn quite as quickly. My sun smart British father would tell you IT DOESN’T MATTER. The sun is equally dangerous no matter whether you see the effects immediately or not.
